Samuel L. Slover

Publisher, Landmark Communications

Clinton, Tennessee, native Samuel Leroy Slover had a talent for turning ailing newspapers into thriving businesses. He was also known for his generosity, community service and an unyielding code of personal and business ethics. He served as mayor of Norfolk during the 1930's depression.

In his lifetime Slover owned or controlled six of Virginia’s largest newspapers, including the Virginian-Pilot. He acquired a radio station and launched Virginia’s second television station.

Slover’s nephew, Frank Batten, whom he helped raise, built on Slover’s communications empire with cable television. His company, Landmark Communications, also launched the Weather Channel.

Sam Slover was named a Pillar of Support by his niece, Mrs. Ernest J. (Bilo) Nelson.
